Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
(1882-1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the "New Deal" programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. Good content T.L.S. as Assistant Secretary of the Navy on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 4, 1918 to art dealer Edward Gottschalk in New York. In part: "...I am delighted that you got the items you mention at the Crimmin' sale...I would be very glad if you would have the China painting relined...my grandfather lived in Hong Kong for many years about the middle of the last century. Could you send the things to my mother's house..." Folds, else very good. No doubt Gottschalk had acted as F.D.R.'s bidding agent at the auction. It's no surprise that Roosevelt, an almost fanatical collector of stamps, art, books and almost everything else, took time during World War I to devote to his passion for collecting. Franklin's grandfather Warren Delano II, and his brother Edward both had shipping interests in China and the Delano family lived there for a period during his mother Sara's childhood (1862-1865).
