Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the ‘New Deal' programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. A very nice grouping of material includes a plate block of ten 5 cent Louisa May Alcott stamps (Scott #862) with the gutter signed in full by Roosevelt, matted with a gilt Franklin D. Roosevelt U.S Mint Presidential Medal, 3 in. dia., as well as additional Roosevelt blocks, a single stamp, and an engraved portrait, all matted together in blue and set into a gilt wood frame. Fine. FDR was an avid, lifelong stamp collector whose passion for philately grew from a childhood interest into a significant hobby, providing solace during his polio and helping him connect with the world as President, even influencing stamp designs and popularizing the hobby nationwide. His collection grew to over 1.2 million stamps, and his last act as President involved approving a UN stamp design.
