Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the 'New Deal' programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. T.L.S. as Assistant Secretary of the Navy on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 25, 1914 to Louis Antisdale of The Rochester Herald. Much New York State political content, mentioning 'the Oneida County situation...the Beardsley crowd...14th Street and Harvey Ferris...C.F.M....Judge O'Connor, Dempsey...Hennessey...' and others. It seems to concern a patronage position, with Roosevelt noting: '...All I have done is to hold up the matter in the past. I have not...held up the confirmation of any of the names, and I will speak to Mr. Roper about it. Naturally I want to work with all of you...' Fine. As a New York state senator (1910-13), Roosevelt became the leader of a group of 'Insurgents' who opposed the bossism of the Tammany Hall machine that dominated the state Democratic Party, and greatly strengthened his political reputation.
