Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Exceptional, fine association typed D.S. as President signed three times, 1p. oblong 8vo., New York, Feb. 1, 1927, a sight draft for a personal loan to a foundation for aiding those with polio, in part: "...GEORGIA WARM SPRINGS FOUNDATION, INC., a corporation of the State of Delaware, promises, for value received, to pay to the order of FRANKLN D. ROOSEVELT, the sum of Seven hundred and fifty dollars in gold coin of the United States of America of the standard of weight and fineness existing on the date of this note, without interest...". Boldly signed in full at bottom, and additionally at left: "Paid April 20, 1927 FDR". Additionally signed by the Foundation's treasurer, BASIL O'CONNOR, who succeeded Roosevelt as President of the organization when the latter was elected governor of New York. On verso it reads: "The within-named payee waives presentment and notice of non-payment of the within note", and signed beneath by Roosevelt: "Franklin D. Roosevelt Paid April 7th, 1927". Why the two dates differ is not known to us, perhaps simply an error. The Warm Springs Foundation was established by Roosevelt and O'Connor in 1927 for the treatment of victims of polio, which Roosevelt contracted in 1921. Until the 1950s and 1960s, this incurable disease mysteriously crippled thousands of American children. In very good condition, and a rare find. ABPC notes that the last note of this kind on the market was more than 20 years ago.
