Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the "New Deal" programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. Exceptional S.P. "Fanklin D. Roosevelt July 4, 1933" as President, 9 1/2" x 7 3/4" b/w overall, an image of the ill-fated cruise U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS at sea and under a full head of steam. Boldly signed, set into a period mat. The Indianapolis was served as Roosevelt's personal transport on several occasions, including a trip to Campobello following her commission in 1932 where Roosevelt entertained his cabinet aboard the vessel, and on a voyage to South America in November and December in 1936. On her return voyage after delivering components of the first atomic bomb to Tinian, the vessel was spotted by Japanese submarine I-58 and sunk with two torpedo hits on July 30, 1945. Survivors floated for days before it was realized that the ship was lost. Out of the crew of nine hundred who survived the sinking, only 316 survived. Ironically, on the day he signed this photo, Roosevelt had made a speech promising to defer international involvements until domestic issues were settles.
