Description:

(1828 - 1900) Texas representative in the First Confederate Congress, who worked closely with the War Department to improve the daily life of soldiers on the field. A.L.S., 6pp. 4to., San Augustine, Texas, July 28, 1859, discussing a legal case. In part: '...You are correct in supposing 'I do not desire to meddle with' the settlement of Mrs. Price's estate. I am particularly anxious to have nothing to do with it...But I deem it my duty not only as a friend to you, but in view also of other relations...to answer your inquiries as far as I may be able. But I beg you to consider what I say as confidential...I was not home when Mrs. Price died and did not return until...two weeks after...I understand that within a few days after Mrs. P. death the girls and little boys all woke up at home and went with Al and family to the plantation...I have not seen any of the girls since my return...I have not seen Frank at all and do not know what he has done or intends to do. I have not seen Al but once and then he was very intoxicated...No steps at all have been taken in Court in regard to Mrs. P's estate...I do no think that Al if left to himself...wants to do wrong...I suppose you must know that several years ago Al transferred his interest in the estate to one of his New Orleans creditors. That creditor now speaks of suing...whether he will do so or not I cannot tell...Price's will is worded with some obscurity, yet I think its meaning is that the estate is to be divided at the death of Mrs. Price...It would seem to me that some course is required to be pursued by those interested. I cannot say that a visit from you would do any harm. What course ought to be pursued I am at a loss to suggest...Uncle is totally unable to do anything I find it my duty to tell you that I do not entertain any hope of his recovery, nor does Dr. Roberts...If Al should tell me anything of which he intends to do I will drop you a line again. I am willing to aid you privately in any way I can...' Mild foxing throughout, with mailing folds.
