FRANCOIS ANTOINE DE BOISSY D'ANGLAS
(1756-1828) French statesman during the Revolution, a member of the National Convention who voted for the detention, rather than the execution, of Louis XVI, instrumental in the Thermidorian Reaction, overthrowing Robespierre and others. A.L.S. ‘Boissy d'Anglas', 2pp. 8vo., July 15, 1822, on integral envelope letterhead to dramatist Victor-Joseph Etienne, Comte de Jouy. de Boissy regrets having to decline an invitation and talks of other social and literary matters. His correspondent le Comte de Jouy (1764-1846) who started his career as a Colonial governor, returning to France to serve during the Revolution, thence earning his literary reputation as a librettist for Spontini and for his own work, ‘Sylla'. Boldly penned and signed, seal tear at bottom from opening, otherwise very good. With an original tinted engraving, suitable for framing.
