FRANCIS W. PICKENS
(1805-1869) Civil War Governor of South Carolina during secession and the first year of the War, he retired in 1862 to his plantation. War date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters" May [or June?] 2, 1861 to Colonel John B. E. Sloan concerning his regiment's march north to Virginia. The Governor writes, in part: "After being mustered in you are ordered to report yourself & Regt. as soon as possible to President Davis or the Genl. in Command at Richmond. .. Capt. Kelso's Company was attached to Col. Kershaw's regt. upon the condition that they should be allowed if they desired it, to join your Regt; if marched to Virginia…" Sloan's Fourth South Carolina Regiment did march to Virginia and participated in First Manassas where they were heavily engaged. Very light toning and expected folds, else fine condition.
