Description:

FRANCIS R. LUBBOCK
(1815 - 1905) Confederate Governor of Texas, 1861-63, served on the staff of Jefferson Davis until the end of the war. Following Lee's surrender, Lubbock was in Richmond with Davis and both fled and were captured together in Georgia. Lubbock was imprisoned at Ft. Delaware for eight months. Fine content partly-printed war-date D.S. as Governor of Texas, 1p. folio, Austin, June 19, 1862, a land grant issued to the Southern Pacific Railroad Company of 174 acres of land in Stephens County, 46 miles southwest of Belknap 'to encourage the construction of Rail Roads in Texas...' Boldly signed by Lubbock at bottom. Slight show-through affecting text, and offsetting very slightly affecting Lubbock's signature, otherwise very good. Originally called the Texas Western Railroad, the Southern Pacific Railroad was unrelated to the later, better known Southern Pacific. Planters in Harrison County helped to sponsor the construction of the railroad, which by 1858 connected Marshall to Swanson's Landing on Caddo Lake. At that time it was only 25 miles long. During the Civil War part of the line to Caddo Lake was taken up, and the rails were re-laid to Waskom where connection was made with the Vicksburg, Shreveport and Texas Railway Company, thus forming a line between Marshall and Shreveport, Louisiana. During the war itself, the company was apparently ordered by CSA Gen. Kirby Smith to connect their road to Shreveport and was granted some 200 impressed slave laborers to do the work. The company also apparently also controlled about 180 black construction hands, though it's unclear whether this was the impressed team or additional hired hands.
