Description:

FRANCIS HOPKINSON (1737-1791) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, active in pre-Revolutionary agitation and had an important part in designing the American flag. Fine manuscript D.S. "Francis Hopkinson Treas of Loans" 1p. 4to., [n.p.], July 11, 1780, a Revolutionary War Loan Office financial document which lists the number and denomination of various "Bill on Spain & France", that is, certificates made out for America's various states during the War period. Integral address leaf is addressed to "Thomas Harwood", U.S. Commissary of Loans for the state of Maryland. Docketed on verso "Bills of Spain & France", hidden due to the way the item is displayed. It reads, in part: "...Of Sets 100 each No. 1- 7 - 700, 5 - 200 - 1 - 1000...also the following sets on them...for which plan to send duplicate receipt as usual...". Folds repaired with tape, showthrough, wear, good condition. Handsomely floated on a beige mat with a portrait and biographical statement, and set into a gilt frame. Not examined out of frame.
