Description:

FRANCIS HOPKINSON
(1737-1791) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, active in pre-Revolutionary agitation and had an important part in designing the American flag. Fine association A.L. (unsigned), 2pp. 8vo. with integral address leaf, [n.p., n.d., likely Bordentown, NJ, 'Monday 22nd'], 1772, to THOMAS MCKEAN (1735-1817), a fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence, member of the Continental Congress, Governor of Pennsylvania and Hopkinson's brother-in-law as well. In part: '...I have aggreeable to your Directions paid Mr. McCall & Mr. Bush / enclosed are their Receipts / I have not yet seen Mr. Purvience, understand that he hath moved down to Maryland...neither can I find John Richardson...Mr. Biddle hath not yet paid in the [ten pounds] but says he will shortly do it...The Packet is not yet arrived. I expect a Patent for my office - as soon as I am properly authorized I shall pay you a visit...respecting a Deputy and other matters...'. On the address leaf, McKean dockets the letter: 'Ltr. March 23rd 1772 Francis Hopkinson Esquire'. Very good. In 1771 McKean
was appointed collector of customs and commissioner of revenue at New Castle. In 1772 to was chosen Speaker of the Assembly of Delaware. The commission he speaks of was undoubtedly for one of these positions.
