Description:

FRANCIS HOPKINSON
(1737 - 1791) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, active in pre-Revolutionary agitation and had an important part in designing the American flag. Partly-printed D.S. as Treasurer of Loans, 1p. oblong 8vo., Connecticut, Apr. 28, 1782, a Continental Loan Office bill of exchange, Anderson US 102-1B, High Rarity-7 (about 6 known), measuring 4 1/4" x 8 1/4", fine condition. This colorful green and black form is denominated for $600 and payable in 3000 Livres Tournois at Paris for an interest payment on a Royal French Revolutionary War loan arranged by Benjamin Franklin from the French King, for funding the Continental Congress. This particular certificate was issued for Connecticut and countersigned by William Imlay as the States Loan-Office Commissioner. Hopkinson's bold signature measures a huge 2 1/2" long. This denomination and signature combination is extremely rare with only about a half dozen examples thought to exist, this being perhaps the finest known and the only example we have encountered. Matted in green level and set simply into silver gilt frame, very good.
