FRANCIS BERNARD
(1714 - 1779) Tory Governor of Massachusetts who resisted the State Assembly's attempts to ban British troops and vessels, which action led to his recall to England and the gift of a baronetcy. Scarce A.L.S. "Fra. Bernard" while Governor of New Jersey, 1p. oblong 4to., Amboy, Nov. 27, 1759, in part: "...Some time ago you promist [sic] to endeavour to get me the Seeds of White Pine...they must now be sent away very soon or not at all, I am obliged to remind you that if they are to be had, they may be ready to go by the Edward Capt. Davis...". Docketed on verso in an unknown hand, with two short lists of [shipping?] calculations. Mounting strip on verso. A bit fragile, with wear at folds, one reinforced on verso with archival tape, otherwise good.
