FRANCIS BARLOW
(1834-1896) Union general during the Civil War who saw action at Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he was left for dead on the field after being mortally wounded only surviving due to aid from the Confederates. A.E.S. on the verso of a war-date A.L.S. written by CLINTON MACDOUGALL (1839 - 1914), Union brigadier general and later Congressman from New York, 2pp. 4to., Petersburg, June 10, 1864, to Gen. John T. Sprague recommending a replacement for a Union officer killed in action during Grant's first assault on Petersburg. In part: '...I would most respectfully recommend for the consideration of his excellency Gov. Seymour the appointment of Capt. Winfield Scott, 126th Reg. New York Vols. to the position of Colonel, made vacant by the death of Col. Baird who was killed in action...Capt. Scott commanded the Regt. During the absence of Col. Baird in the first five battles of this eventful campaign...I can only speak of him as a gallant and faithful officer and one in every way worthy of a promotion.' Gen. Barlow endorses the recommendation, adding '...Respectfully forwarded approved. I trust this promotion will be bestowed by his Excellency the Governor of the State of New York upon Capt. Scott rather than upon the present Lt. Col. who has not been with his Regt. in the field in this campaign.' Signature at the conclusion. A few scattered stains, else fine. WINFIELD SCOTT (1837 - 1910) was an American Baptist minister, who left his first job as a pastor to lead a company during the American Civil War. He became known as the 'Fighting Parson' while he commanded Company C, 126th New York Volunteers. He was wounded during Battle of Harpers Ferry and twice during the battles at Gettysburg and Spotsylvania Court House, leading After retiring from the army, Scott moved to the Salt River Valley where he founded and was active in the early promotion of Scottsdale, Arizona.
