Description:

A small fragment of limestone, approx. 1" in diameter, taken from the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte in the South Atlantic island of St. Helena, where he died in exile and was buried before his exhumation and reburial at Les Invalides in Paris. The fragment is affixed to a vintage inset mount within a wood frame, 11 1/4" square overall, with the black ink caption below: "Napoleon's Tomb St. Helena (15 Oct. 1840)". The reverse of the mount further bears a black ink inscription in the same hand, in full: "From the tomb of Napoleon at St. Helens. Given to me by Dr. Wm. Goodell of Westchester. Presented to him by the Revd. Geo. Wood, Secretary of the American Board of Foreign Missions who was at St. Helena when Prince Joinville [Francois d'Orléans, son of King Louis I] exhumed the body (15 Oct. 1840) to transport it to France." This statement is signed at the conclusion with the initials "N.H.P.", although we have not been able to determine this individual's identity. The mount and frame show wear and minor soiling commensurate with age, else very good.
