FOUR-STAR GENERAL FLAG ATTRIBUTED TO GEN. LUCIUS CLAY
LUCIUS D. CLAY JR (1897 - 1978) US Army General. He rose in rank to become the Commander-in-Chief of US Forces in Europe and the military governor of the US Zone in Germany from 1947 until 1949, following the end of World War II. He is remembered for ordering and maintaining the Berlin airlift, necessitated by the Russian Blockade of West Berlin, Germany, which began on June 26, 1948 and ended on September 30, 1949, that kept the Allied sector of Berlin supplied with food, fuel, and other necessary materials. Four-star general's flag, 58 x 35 in. cotton with four stars sewn to a red linen field. The hoist bears four two blackened grommets, a pocket to allow a lanyard to be passed through, and a handwritten notation: ‘GEN. CLAY'. Lightly soiled, otherwise fine. No provenance other than its original owner having collected for over fifty years, 1940s to 1990s, thus sold as is for the value of the flag alone.
