FOUR CONFEDERATE GENERALS ON ONE DOCUMENT
Rarely seen late war document bearing signed endorsements of four prominent Confederate generals. The document itself is a 1p. 4to. Medical Certificate for Detail, Lynchburg, Feb. 17, 1855, issued in the case of W. B. Crittenden of the 23rd Va. Regt., a nurse who is found to be disabled for a period of at least 60 days having suffer for two years from 'Organic diseases of the heart'. On the verso of the document, which had a leaf added, appear endorsements from: JOHN B. GORDON (1832-1904), Confederate major general who led a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and crushed Grant's line at the Wilderness, a Mar. 4, 1865 A.E.S. forwarding the document; WILLIAM M. GARDNER (1824-1901), Confederate brigadier general severely wounded at First Bull Run, took over the regiment commanded by Francis Bartow after he was killed, later served as chief of prisons in Virginia, Florida, and the Carolinas, signed forwarding endorsement, Richmond, Feb. 27,1865; CLEMENT A. EVANS (1833-1911), Confederate brigadier general who saw action at Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, later an influential minister and author, a Mar. 4, 1865 A.E.S. forwarding the document; and WILLIAM TERRY (1824-1888) Confederate brigadier general. Saw action at both the First and Second Battle of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, also a forwarding A.E.S., Mar.3,1865.Overall very good.
