Description:

(FORT SUMTER) GEORGE W. SNYDER
(1833 - 1861) West Point graduate who served in the Corps of Engineers. Snyder aided in the raising of the flag at Fort Sumter after its staff had been shot during the bombardment of the fort. He would die on Nov. 17, 1861 of, as General Barnard put it, ‘overzealousness in discharge of his duties while in impaired health from his services at Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter'. Rare A.L.S. ‘George', 3pp. 4to., Warrington, Aug. 4, 1858, to his father William. In part: ‘…I have no need of money and if you think not, we will let these men, Radcliff…other men, keep that money as long as they want it. I shall leave this place to-morrow and start for the north…I shall stop in New York City a day or two, and then go on to Boston to report to Col. Thayer, who is now in command [of] the Corps of Engineers, in the absence of General Lotter. I expect to be stationed in Boston but am not certain. I will write you again when I learn where I will be and what my day is…The autumnal months are the most dangerous here. The yellow fever prevails here to a great intent in N. Orleans…' Stained, otherwise very good.
