17. FORT GEORGE AND LOWER MANHATTAN A crisp and finely hand colored engraving after William Burgis, 21" x 14", circa 1730, entitled "FORT GEORGE with the CITY of NEW YORK from the S W.". Printed for Carrington Bowles, "Map & Printseller at No 69 in St Pauls Church Yard, London", accomplished circa 1764. Engraved by John Carwitham (active 1723-1741). The artist, Burgis, was active in America from 1716 to the mid 1730s. A superb view of early eighteenth-century New York City with several prominent buildings in view including Fort George together with Trinity Church, the Lutheran Church, the New Dutch Church, the French Eglise du Saint Esprit, City Hall, and the Old Dutch Church on Garden Street. Light soiling at margins, a few minor creases, else fine condition.$2,000-3,000
