Description:

FORMER DACHAU INMATES GIFT TO CARDINAL JOSEPH BERAN
JOSEPH BERAN (1888 – 1969) Czech Roman Catholic prelate who served as the Archbishop of Prague from 1946 until his death and was elevated into the cardinalate in 1965. Beran was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp during World War II after the Nazis had targeted him for "subversive and dangerous" behavior where he almost died in 1943 due to disease. He was freed in 1945. His cause for canonization opened in 1998 and he became titled as a Servant of God.[3] He was granted the rare honor of being buried in Saint Peter's Basilica upon his death. A fine association piece, the book 'I Mosaici Cristiani di Aquileia' ('The Christian Mosaics of Aquileia'), published in Italy ca. 1960 by Bianco, approx. 200pp. 4to., a collection of captioned plates depicting mosaics uncovered in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia, Italy. The book is inscribed on the front flyleaf in an unknown hand to Beran: 'the red triangles of Dachau' (red triangles being worn by political prisoners), and is signed by seven of Beran's ex-fellow prisoners who have added their old Dachau prisoner numbers. A very fine association piece.
