Description:

HENRY WOODHOUSE (1884–1970) was an Italian-born US aviation writer, magazine publisher, investor, and collector. After serving four years for manslaughter, Woodhouse became a prominent promoter of civilian and military aviation, also publishing 'Flying' (still in publication today) and several other magazines. Later, Woodhouse became a prolific forger, creating forgeries of signers of the Declaration of Independence, as well as Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Alexander Graham Bell, Amelia Earhart, and many others whom he offered in his New York gallery. A great pair of Woodhouse items, includes: a signed check, New York, July 7, 1927 making a payment of $50.00 to MARIE PEARY STAFFORD. (1893-1978), the daughter of Adm. Robert Peary (whose writing Woodhouse also forged!) Mrs. Stafford, the "Snow Baby", was world famous, having been born in northern Greenland while her father was on an expedition. Stafford endorses the check with two signatures. ALSO: a letter secretarially signed on American Society of Aeronautic Engineers, New York, [n.d., ca. 1920], upon which Woodhouse added a forged signature "Thos. A. Edison" The verso of the page has had "FORGERY" written in ink behind the Edison signature. Very good.
