FOREIGN TRADERS IN CHINA
Lot of four items signed by early foreign traders operating from China. Includes: GEORGE B. ROBINSON (1797-1855) The first appointed Chief Superintendent of Trade at Canton. Robinson arrived at Macau in July 1834. Franked front panel of an envelope, signed at bottom, April 1, 1827; WILLIAM APPLETON (1786-1862) American merchant and ship-owner, founded the trading house of William Appleton & Company which had extensive trade with China. Signature with place "Boston", on a small piece; JOHN REEVES (1774-1856) English Inspector of Tea for the East India Company, spent 19 years working in Canton during the tea season. A keen amateur naturalist, Reeves documented the animals and plants in and around Canton. He also collected specimens and commissioned talented Chinese artists to paint them. Clipped signature, first name trimmed, signed in Canton; and JAMSETJEE JEEJEBHOY (1783-1859) Indian merchant and philanthropist who commenced his career with trading voyages to China during which he was attacked by the French and by pirates. His profits were used to benefit India's poor. A.L.S. 3pp.8vo., 18 Carlton Hill East, Jan. 22, 1857, signed in Farsi, including his seal, annotated in another hand in English. Four pieces.
