FOREIGN ENVOYS TO CHINA
Lot of three items signed by early envoys or consuls to China. Includes: SINIBALDO DE MAS Spanish diplomat and author, the first Spanish ambassador to China. A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], in part: "…I will show you a part of the interesting work that Mr. Wade has printed…for an Englishman to learn Chinese or for a Chinaman to learn English…We dine at the French Legation this evening…". Very good; FREDERICK F. LOW (1828-1894) Governor of California and as U.S. Minister to China from 1869 to 1874. Low sought the assistance of the Chinese Government in preparing for a mission to negotiate a "shipwreck" convention and a commercial treaty with Korea. An expedition of five U.S. steamships under the joint command of Low and Rear Admiral John Rogers ended up destroying five Korean forts before the squadron withdrew to China. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Sacramento, May 17, 1867 declining a request. Mounted; and AMOS P. WILDER U.S. consul at Hong Kong, 1906-1909, and Consul at Shanghai during the Chinese Revolution, 1909-1914. T.L.S., 1 pg. 4to., New Haven, 1931, a letter of recommendation for a woman sent to the Chief Consular Officer in London. Very good.
