Description:

FIVE UNION GENERALS
A fine group of five war-date endorsements by prominent Union generals, penned at the conclusion of an A.L.S. of Second Lieutenant E. Clarence Hill, 34th N.Y. Infy, 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Qrs 34th Regt. N. Y. Vols', July 25, 1862, which recommends Sgt. James McCormick for promotion. Hill cites: ‘…His coolness & gallant conducts at the battle of Fair Oaks…After following the enemy some distance into the woods…he rushed in front and gallantly brought [his] men into line…Of his bravery and courage there is no room for doubt…'. A further attestation is made by Col. James. A. Luster at the conclusion. On the verso is an A.E.S. of JOHN SEDGWICK (1813-1864) Union major general wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter while claiming the Confederates would not be able to hit an elephant at such a distance. He approves and forwards the document; an A.E.S. of EDWIN V. SUMNER (1797-1863) Union major general who commanded a corps at South Mountain and Antietam, as well as the Right Grand Division at Gettysburg. He too approves and forwards the document; a lengthy manuscript E.S. of WILLIAM A. GORMAN (1816-1876) Union brevet brigadier general, commanded the 1st Minnesota Infantry, serving in the First Battle of Bull Run. His troops suffered high casualties during the Battle of Antietam during an ill-fated attack on Confederate positions in the West Woods. In part: ‘…This is a highly meritorious case and I cordially endorse the commendation of this Sergt. from my personal knowledge…'; a manuscript E.S. of SETH WILLIAMS (1822-1866) Union brigadier general active at Gettysburg, Petersburg and Atlanta, and Adjutant General of the Army of the Potomac, to whom the document has been forwarded for transmission to the Governor of New York; and a final endorsement of Brigadier General THOMAS M. VINCENT (1832-1909), who also forwards the document to the Governor. A fine collection of signatures, in very good condition.
