Description:

FIVE CONFEDERATE GENERALS…AND A MEMBER OF THE ‘IMMORTAL 600'
A very rare war-date D.S. 1p. 8vo. ‘A List of Absented & Deserters Co. A 5th La.,' cavalry, with F. H. Brown noted as having deserted on Aug. 15, 1862. Signed by THOMAS C. CAMPBELL (1841-1905), Lieutenant Commanding. On verso, the document is forwarded by captain of the company JOHN G. ANGELL (1841-1877), one of the ‘Immortal 600', a group of Confederate officers in Union captivity who were held as human shields on Morris Island in Charleston harbor, and in the direct line of friendly fire from Fort Sumter. The prisoners were then transported to Cockspur Island and subjected to further inhumane treatment. Following Angell's endorsement are those of five Confederate generals, including the very rare signature of LEROY A. STAFFORD (1822-1864), Confederate brigadier general who led the 9th Louisiana Infantry throughout the war. Killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness when a minie ball pierced his spine. Stafford signs an endorsement penned in another hand that forwards the document. Beneath Stafford's endorsement is that of JUBAL EARLY (1819 - 1894) Confederate major general who fought throughout the war, leading a division at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania, and conducted a threatening raid on Washington. Early signs a manuscript endorsement which reads: ‘Wd Qrs Early's Div. Aug. 22, 1863 Respectfully forwarded'. At top right is an endorsement of ISAAC R. TRIMBLE (1802-1888), Confederate major general who led Pender's forces during Picket's charge at Gettysburg after the former was wounded. He was severally wounded, losing a leg and captured. The lengthy endorsement is penned in another hand and reads, in full: ‘Hd Qu Cav Div Aug 28, 1863 Respt Referred to Col Rosser who will make appropriate incarceration and send this man if he has joined your Regt without proper authority, to Hd Qu La Genl R. S. Ewell 2nd Army Corps under Grant…'. Trimble signs beneath ‘I. R. Trimble Maj Genl'. Beneath Trimble's endorsement is that of THOMAS L. ROSSER (1836-1910), Confederate major general known for his daring cavalry raids and tactical brilliance, a favorite subordinate of J.E.B. Stuart, roommate and close personal friend of George A. Custer, earned the nickname 'Savior of the Valley' late in the war. Rosser signs an endorsement in another hand, reading, in full: ‘Hd Quar 4th Va Cav Sept. 14, 1864. The within named deserter cannot be found in this Regt. There is no such man in it.', his signature ‘T. L. Rosser Col. Comd'g' below. The final endorsement is that of FITZHUGH LEE (1837-1891), Confederate major general of cavalry and son of R.E. Lee who fought at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and surrendered at Appomattox. He also forwards the document. On ‘adversity' letterhead with expected fading to ink as well as toning and wear. Signatures are, however, quite legible.
