Description:

FITZHUGH LEE
(1835 - 1905) Confederate major general and nephew of Robert E. Lee who directed troops in Stuart's ride around McClellan and fought at Antietam and Gettysburg. He also cut his way out of Appomattox only to surrender two days later. FITZHUGH LEE QUOTES ROBERT E. LEE...A 'QUOTE' NEVER UTTERED BY LEE! A wonderful A.Q.S., 1p. 8vo., Omaha, Mar. 4, 1901, in full: 'Duty is the sublimest word in the English language.' Fitzhugh Lee Brig. Gen.' Two margoinal file holes, else fine. This quote was for many years attributed to Robert E. Lee, Fitzhugh's uncle, and is still believed by millions to have been spoken by him to this day. However, the quote is based on a letter purportedly written by Lee and discovered by a Union soldier at Arlington and subsequantly published. Besides being widely considered a forgery, there are also inconsistencies that one may consider, brilliantly discussed in a paper by Dr. Charles A. Graves, 'The Forged Letter of General Robert E. Lee'. A simply amazing quote!
