789. FIRST EAST-WEST NON-STOP TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT Rare set of three signatures of the crew of the aircraft "Bremen", Captain HERMANN KOEHL, Navigator Maj. JAMES C. FITZMAURICE and owner of the record-setting aircraft "Bremen", BARON GUENTHER VON HUENEFELD, one dated 1928, on separate cards. Very good. The "Bremen", a single-engine Junkers W33, left Baldonel Aerodrome, Ireland on April 12 and flew to Greenly Island, Canada, (about 1,200 miles from New York) arriving on April 14, 1928, after a flight fraught with difficult conditions and compass problems. The Bremen now belongs to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan but is currently on display in a hangar at the Bremen Airport Museum where it has been completely restored. Von Huenefeld's signature is quite rare, as he died only a year after the flight at the age of 37, Fitzmaurice died in near poverty, a "forgotten hero", and Koehl also died in 1938, nearly as neglected after having had numerous disputes with his fellow fliers. $200 - 300
