Description:

After Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic from West to East in May 1927, the idea of flying in the opposite direction, which is more difficult because of the prevailing winds, became more and more popular. On 12 April 1928, Captain HERMANN KOHL, Major JAMES FITZMAURICE and Baron GUENTHER VON HUENEFELD left Baldonnel in their Junker W33 and crossed the Atlantic Ocean, landing at Greenly Island on the south coast of Labrador, Canada. Even though they missed their intended destination, New York City, they were the first to cross the Atlantic by fixed-wing aircraft from Europe to America. Included in this lot is an octavo sheet or New York Ritz Carleton stationery signed by the three, dated 'May, 1928'. Also present is the extravagant 10pp. 4to. program for the banquet offered in their honor by the City of New York on Apr. 26, 1926, picturing the aviators within, setting forth the evening's program, etc., along with the extensive banquet seating list. Three pieces, very good.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
