FILTHY-MOUTHED PRIVATE GETS COURT-MARTIALED The raunchiest Civil War document we've ever encountered using a term we've never seen used in the 19th century! This A.D.S. 2pp. 4to., was penned by 2nd Lt. Charles M. Van Patten of the 2nd Vet. NY Cav. at camp at Morganza, La. in August, 1864 and is Van Patten's "Charges and Specifications Preferred against James Burke Priv. 'C' Co. 2nd NY Vet. Cav .". The charges set forth Burke's rather vile reaction to disciplinary actions taken against him, in part: "... [Burke] did absent himself from roll call, for which he was put upon fatigue duty, and while performing this duty, he used very abusive language toward his superior...To wit: - 'You are a God damn Cock sucker. You are a God damn Government beat', this repeated several times in a manner exceedingly disrespectful... [he] did present a loaded carbine at the breast of Serg't Flaherty...using the following language...'I'll be God damned if I'll be tied up for you' or words to that effect... ". In addition, the verso of the document bears an endorsement from Maj. Duncan Cameron: "I most respectfully request that this man be tried immediately ". Very good. $750-1,000
