Description:

FIGHTING ON THE PENINSULA WITH THE 71ST PA.
Fine content A.L.S. of Pvt. Samuel G. Murphy of Co. G, 71st Pa. Infantry (originally the 1st California), 4pp. 8vo., "Camp at Fair Oak Station", June 15, 1862, to his siblings in New York. Murphy describes skirmishes preceding the Seven Days, in part: "...a Flag of Truce came in here Friday...the Lt. Colonel of the 106th Pennsylvania...got outside of our lines...and was taken prisoner...After we had been out about 2 hours a few of the Rebels commenced firing a few shots in from of us...we shot one of them with a ball & 9 buckshot. You ought to hear him holler. Seven of them made to get his body, but a few shots soon scattered them. I guess he died soon afterwards...There was 2 men wounded...had 4 balls go through him, and the other had 2. I guess they will both recover. The 81st had 1 Captain killed & 4 privates wounded...". Last page soiled, else very good. Murphy would be wounded at the "Bloody Angle" at Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863.
