67. SAMUEL WRAGG FERGUSON (1834-1917) Confederate brigadier general who served with Beauregard until Shiloh, then under Wheeler in the Carolinas. Fine content war-date A.D.S. as aide-de-camp, 1p. 4to., Brook's Station, June 18, 1861, a true retained copy of a letter from Brigadier General Theophilos Holmes, commanding the Department of Fredericksburg to Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard. In part: "...Herewith enclosed you will please find a copy of a letter...answered by Genl. Lee, stating that the Enemy's plans were not yet sufficiently developed to justify the adoption of my suggestions and recommending if my force could be divided that I should erect a Battery at Marbias[?] point some thirty miles below here...how utterly out of the question it is for me to send a Regiment to your neighborhood ...scarcely be sufficient to resist an effort by the Enemy to land with a view to invade..." Seal tear at upper-left, a small hole in the text affecting one word, still overall very good. $700-900
