Description:

1193. FERDINAND V AND ISABELLA I King and Queen of Spain who ruled jointly from 1479 to 1504, they fought and expelled the Moors in 1492, established the Inquisition, and are best remembered for their financing of Columbus' voyage to the Americas. Fine lot of two documents, each one signed by one of the famous monarchs, includes ISABELLA I (1451-1504) D.S. signing as always "Yo la reyna" ("I the Queen"), 1p. 4to., Granada, Mar. 3, 1501, a royal decree from Isabella to her Chamberlain, Pancho de Paredes, ordering him to pay 3,000 maravedis to Juan Cobra, which she grants to him. On verso is a receipt signed by Cobra. One letter in signature affected by a very clean cut cancel, repaired on verso and virtually indiscernible, trimmed slightly at bottom, else near fine. With FERDINAND V (1474-1516) D.S., likewise signing as usual "Yo el Rey" ("I the King"), Burgos, May 12, 1508, as sole ruler of Spain after the death of Isabella, untranslated, apparently also a decree. Light show-through affects a letter in signature and elsewhere, else very good. As the size and manuscript handwriting of both documents closely approximate each other, the are nicely matched and would frame together beautifully. $3,000-4,000
