FERDINAND II AND ISABELLA I King and Queen of Spain who ruled jointly from 1479 to 1504, they fought and expelled the Moors in 1492, established the Inquisition, and are best remembered for their financing of Columbus' voyage to the Americas. Rare D.S. signed by both as "Yo el Rey" and "Yo la Reyna", 1p. 4to., Segovia, 1494, a royal order stating that a grant had been made to Juan de Vela Nunez and his wife Maria de Mesa (daughter of Luis de Mesa, receiver of goods confiscated from heretics), of all the goods chattels confiscated and held by the Chamber and Exchequer "because of sentence for the crime of heresy, executed by Luis de Mesa; but our intention was and is that the grant be not to Juan but to Maria as the only daughter of Luis de Mesa...". Worn a bit with fold splits repaired on verso, some soiling and marginal wear yet still entirely presentable and suitable for framing. Although Ferdinand and Isabella are most remembered for their patronage of Columbus, they also instituted the Spanish Inquisition. The Alhambra Decree, issued on March 31, 1492 following the triumph over the Muslim Moors, ordered the expulsion of all Jews and Muslims from Spain and its territories and possessions by July 31, 1492.
