Description:

FEMALE SS GUARD'S IDENTITY CARD FROM RAVENSBRUCK
An excessively rare female 'SS-Helferin' guard's identity card ('ausweis') issued by the commandant of the notorious Ravensbruck concentration camp, a concentration camp largely exclusively for women in the German Reich. The 5.75 x 4 in. beige card 'Nr. 1164' attests that 'Frau Margaret Lorenzen: '...is a member of Concentration Camp Ravensbruck...All public organs must ensure their protection and help...' Lorenzen has signed the card beneath her portrait photograph which is tied to the card with the camp's official stamp. The card is additionally signed by the notorious camp commander, SS-Sturmbannfuhrer FRITZ SUHREN (1908-1950). Suhren's policy upon taking command in 1942 was to exterminate the prisoners through working them as hard as possible and feeding them as little as possible. He also provided inmates to Dr. Karl Gebhardt for experimentation, included exposing women to high levels of x-rays in order to accomplish sterilization. Captured by the Americans in 1949, Suhren was tried and hanged. Lornzen served in the camp from July 14, 1944 to Feb. 13, 1945.
