Description:

FELIX STEINER
(1896 - 1966) Waffen-SS 'Obergruppenfuhrer' and Knight's Cross recipient who contributed significantly to the development and transformation of the Waffen-SS into a combat force made up of volunteers and conscripts. During the Battle of Berlin, he was ordered to envelop the 1st Belorussian Front through a pincer movement, advancing from the north of the city. However, as his unit was outnumbered by ten to one, Steiner made it clear that he did not have the capacity for a counter-attack. Fine association and rare war-date typed D.S. ‘Steiner' 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.], June 16, 1944. An assessment on onion skin paper of JURGEN WAGNER (1901 - 1947), Waffen-SS brigade leader, commander of the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division 'Nederland', awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Wagner's name and awards open this fine document, with Steiner then listing his personal characteristics and leadership traits: ‘Self-assured, energetic personality, warm-hearted, caring and companionable…Intelligent troop officer with remarkable psychological influence on the corps and troops. Good tactical judgment, quick to grasp things and knows how to act logically…He sometimes encounters difficulties with impersonal leadership, which can be overcome just as easily with sensible intervention…An old National Socialist with clear political judgment. All in all, a leader…suitable for division commander…'. With full translation. Boldly signed at conclusion with show through due to paper's thinness. File holes at left margin, overall very good.
