Description:

(1905 - 1973) Catholic Army chaplain with the First Division Infantry in Africa, Normandy, and Sicily invasions. He received a Silver Star, the Bronze Star, two Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart. Post-war, Flynn saved the lives of thousands of displaced persons in camps throughout Germany and Austria. T.L.S. on Catholic War Relief Services letterhead, 1p. 4to., Munich, Oct. 14, 1948 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and in the battle for St. Lo, through France, the Hurtgen Forest, and at Aachen. Good content, in part: "...These dull and chill days call to mind the weary war of attrition and the days of waiting in fog and cold while dug in around Aachen...the brave lads who fell that time and later in the bitter Hurtgen snow and mists. I am sure that they are truly martyrs...boys who met deaths on battlefields the names of which they could not even pronounce...particularly true of American soldiers who fought without rancor, who felt no hateful vengeance..." File holes at top, else fine.
