Description:

EXTRACTS ON FREE TRADE IN CHINA
Very scarce printed publication, "Extracts from a Series of Papers Published in 'The Oriental Herald' and Other Journals, Previous to the Year 1830, and Written for the Promotion of Free Trade", by British East India Company employee James Goddard (London: A. Sweeting), 1846, 59pp. 8vo. A tipped-in autograph note affixed to the first page explains the purpose of these writings: "The subjoined tracts form a very small portion of a protracted series of efforts on the part of the writer, for the promotion of Free Trade with China. They have been reprinted to show that he was a labourer in the cause of Free Trade when the workers were few, and the harvest remote, and also in the hope that they may lend to give a stimulus to the present agitation, for a reduction of the duty on tea..." The essays cover such topics as "The Civil Character of the Chinese", "Political and Commercial Relations of Great Britain with China", and "American Imports of British Goods into China". The volume is loosely bound with string, which is coming loose, and the paper covers are moderately soiled, else very good.
