Description:

EXCAVATED CONFEDERATE PIKE
A great Civil War relic, an iron "bridle cutter"-style pike head, 12 1/2" blade, 19" overall, with a double-edged leaf-shaped blade, with an edged hook at the base of the blade and a cylindrical socket. Also present, but detached from the head, are the two iron straps or "cheeks", each 13"long, which would have reinforced the attachment point between the socket and the haft of the weapon. Affixed to the pike head is a paper label signed by William C. Adams, CEO of the Atlanta Cutlery Corporation, in full: "I hereby certify that the pike to which this is attached is an original Confederate arm and was excavated from the right-of-way of the old Wilmington and Manchester Railroad." With this attribution, we can say that this pike is almost certainly part of a cache of similar weapons and other relics excavated from a site along that line near Manchester, South Carolina, where Union raiders under Gen. Edward E. Potter captured and burned nine locomotives and almost 200 railcars full of Confederate munitions, including hundreds of pikes. The relic is coated with shellac or a similar preservative in spots, and some fragments of metal are loose but present, otherwise in expected excavated condition.
