Description:

EX-SLAVE CONJOINED TWIN SIDESHOW PERFORMERS
Rare ca. 1873 2 1/2" x 3 5/8" carte de visite photograph picturing African-American conjoined twins Millie-Christine McKoy. Born into slavery in 1851, the twins were joined at the lower spine. They were sold three times before their first birthday, and kidnapped at least twice before being exhibited as curiosities around the world. They were stripped naked and examined in every town in which they were "displayed", and freed from bondage on numerous occasions, only to be returned to their previous circumstances. They were finally reunited with their family and toured the world, performing, learning five languages, and becoming accomplished pianists, dancers and singers entertaining kings and queens. Backstamp by W. L. Germons, Phila. One surface crease from center left to the lower edge of the girls' skirt, some light soiling, else very good.
