Description:

EVERETT PEABODY
(1830 - 1862) Union army officer, colonel of the 13th Mo. Vols. (later the 25th Mo. Vols.). Peabody fought at First Lexington where he was twice wounded. Early on Apr. 6th at Shiloh, April 6, on his own authority, he sent out a patrol to engage the Confederates and to provide a warning to Union units in time to prepare for the coming onslaught. Fighting erupted and Peabody sent reinforcements into the fight. Peabody led the rest of his brigade against the rebel brigade of General S.A.M. Wood. He had already sustained three wounds when the fourth bullet hit him square in the face, killing him instantly. Fine content A.Q.S., 1p. 8vo., Feb. 9, 1853, in part: 'He that has light within his own clear breast; May sit in the center, & enjoy bright day; But he that hides a dark soul & foul thought, Benighted walks under the med-day Sun; Himself in his own dungeon...' Fine.
