Description:

(EVACUATION OF CHINA) UNIT HISTORIES OF 701ST M.P. BATTALION
An especially rare pair of unit histories of the U.S. 701st Military Police Service Battalion which served as a police unit in early postwar China from Mar. 17, 1946 to Jan. 29, 1949, when it undertook the evacuation of remaining Americans and certain Nationalists from Shanghai and became the last American force to leave the city...and probably China as well. The two histories, each paperbound and about 45pp. 8vo., are the sixth and eighth anniversary journals and histories of the unit, both published in China and containing a copious number of photographs and descriptive text of their service in Shanghai, Peiping, Nanking, and northern China. The 701st had been originally tasked in the States with training and putting down 'race riots' before being sent to China to secure American facilities, locate graves, etc. The battalion soon found itself involved in the Chinese Civil War, as Mao's communist forces began to overrun Nationalists led by Chiang Kai Shek. The 8th Anniversary history, dated Feb. 1, 1949, vividly describes the chaos, and many photographs within bear witness to the swift evacuation of Shanghai showing Army air and sea transports, bridges and railways attacked by 'communists', foreign nationals and dependents being evacuated, and the 'Last view of the Shanghai waterfront' taken from the battalions evacuation ship. Covers bear stains and tears, and some old repairs, contents are very good.
