EUGENE V. DEBS
(1855 - 1926) American Socialist and labor organizer, Socialist candidate for President, sentenced to ten years imprisonment for violating the Espionage Act. Fine content and association T.L.S. "Eugene V. Debs" as presidential candidate on illustrated "The Socialist party National Headquarters" letterhead, 1p. 4to., "En Route to Joliet, Ills.", Oct. 29, 1908 to Mary E. MacNichols, most likely a Christian Scientist. in part: "...My dear Comrade: Your kind note and the copy of [Baker's book] 'Science and Health' with your inscription in it were handed to me this morning. Permit me to thank you most heartily...for the gift of Mrs. Eddy's book which I shall take pleasure in examining carefully...and which I shall treasure always as a token of your valued comradeship...I was not in physical condition to do justice to myself last evening...Perhaps on some future occasion I may be able to again address your people and put the fire of my soul into my call...". Sold with the original transmittal envelope from Debs' train, the "Socialist Red Special" and a postcard picturing him and espousing his views, all matted together and set into a gilt frame. Typing has faded only slightly, else very good.
