Description:

ERWIN ROMMEL
(1891 - 1944) German field marshal whose Afrika Corps threw back repeated British and American assaults in North Africa, later he defended Normandy and ultimately was forced to commit suicide due to his implication in the Hitler bomb plot. Fabulous signed portrait along with those of three other top Afrika Korps generals, contained within a wartime history of the Afrika Korps. The book is 'Marsch und Kampf des D.A.K. 1941' ['March and Struggle of the G[erman]. A[frica]. C[orps]. 1941], 'Issued by the General Command of the German Afrikakorps' (Munich: Carl Rohrig Verlag), Vol. I, 1943. 216pp. 8 1/2 x 12 in., the first volume of the history of the vaunted Afrika Korps, heavily illustrated and with descriptive text. The volume opens with full-page portraits of the leaders of the famous military force, the first of course being Rommel shown in a chest, up pose. He has signed in indelible pencil (as was his custom) just beside his image. On the verso of the same page appears a portrait of Gen. LUDWIG CRUWELL (1892–1958) who was made commander of the Afrika Korps on 31 July 1941 under Rommel, who on the same day took command of Panzer Army Africa. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Cruwell surrendered to the British forces on 29 May 1942. Cruwell signs beneath his facsimile signature. On the opposite page appears a similarly signed portrait of Gen. FRITZ BEYERLEIN (1899-1970), Rommel's Chief of Staff in the Afrika Korps and later commandingd the 3rd Panzer Division, the Panzer Lehr Division and LIII Army Corps in the European theatre. Bayerlein was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Finally, two pages further appears a similar portrait of Gen. JOHANN VON RAVENSTEIN (1889-1962), commander of the 6th Panzer Division and who captured Giraud's headquarters, and led the 21st Panzer Division from May 1941 under Rommel in North Africa until being captured at Tobruk in November 1941. Light wear to spine and front cover else very good. Obviously, Rommel's signature was obtained during the war, and that of von Ravenstein (and probably the other generals) postwar.
