Description:

ERWIN ROMMEL
(1891 - 1944) German field marshal whose Afrika Corps threw back repeated British and American assaults in North Africa, later he defended Normandy and ultimately was forced to commit suicide due to his implication in the Hitler bomb plot. Very early good content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [Stuttgart], Feb. 11, 1918 in German to 'Comrade Horst'. In part: '...You have just reached me in Stuttgart. I had some soldiers to bring me field-gray and modern cloth in your depot in Ludwigsburg. I am sitting here now already for three days and they have already promoted me to the job of a bureau-officer who has to become familiar with matters on internal affairs. I think I will have difficulties in accepting this new situation and way of living, as you might know. I feel already homesick and I think it will become worse day by day. This is bitter but I have to swallow it...' Pencil notes at top, else fine condition and rare from this very early period. Rommel's first combat experience was on 22 August 1914 as a platoon commander near Verdun. In 1917, at the Battle of Caporetto, Rommel and his 150 men captured 81 guns and 9,000 men (including 150 officers), at the loss of six dead and 30 wounded. At Longarone on 9 November, Rommel again decided to attack with a much smaller force. Convinced that they were surrounded by an entire German division, the 1st Italian Infantry Division - 10,000 men - surrendered to Rommel. In January 1918, Rommel was promoted to Hauptmann and assigned to a staff position in the 64th Army Corps, where he served for the remainder of the war...writing this letter from his new position.
