Description:

ERWIN J. ROMMEL
(1891 - 1944) German field marshal whose Afrika Corps threw back repeated British and American assaults in North Africa, later he defended Normandy and ultimately was forced to commit suicide due to his implication in the Hitler bomb plot. Superb content war-date T.L.S. "Rommel", 1p. 4to., on his Panzerarmee Afrika letterhead, Mar. 29, 1942. An over-confident Rommel writes to Major General Jakobi, in part: '...Your January letter, which reached me only now, gave me particular pleasure. Your concerns at that time are no longer pertinent. The situation in our theatre of war has completely changed because of the retaking of Cyrenaica. After very hard fighting, our brave boys have beaten back the enemy. I am particularly proud to be at the head of this Panzer Army, which will continue to make its contribution to the final victory in the future. As regards the East, we've followed the unprecedented achievements there with the same interest that you watch us in Africa. With passionate hearts we all hope for final victory...I continue to wish you...much soldierly good fortune...". Capturing Cyrenaica in March 1941, Rommel held it against the British and gained popularity in the Arab world. However by December 1941, his Afrika Korps was forced to withdraw across Cyrenaica. From January 2nd to 17th, Axis forces were defeated at Halfaya Pass, Bardia and Sollum. In mid January, Erwin Rommel consolidated his forces and positions and decided to launch a new offensive when his force would be properly supplied and equipped. In June 1942, he would be made the youngest German field marshal in the Germany Army for his success in pushing the British from Cyrenaica to Egypt. Fine condition, with original envelope.
