Description:

ERNST ROHM
(1887 - 1934) Nazi who organized, trained and headed the SA, a friend of Hitler who was at his side in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, later set-up and executed by Hitler following their disagreement on the use of the two million-strong. SA. ROHM WARNS: ANYONE WHO COMES TO SEE ME DOES SO AT HIS OWN RISK! Somewhat cryptic A.L.S. on a postcard signed ‘Ernst' at the conclusion and ‘Rohm' in address panel, 1p. sm. 8vo., [n.p.], June 23, [1927], to his old colleague and possibly fellow gay man, Franz Kugler. In part: ‘…Whether I will be in Mue [Munich?] is quite uncertain. Anyone who comes to see me does so at his own risk! The matter discussed does not look good at all at the moment; it is quite possible that it will break up altogether…'. Other letters we have handled indicate that Kugler and Rohm shared a close and even intimate relationship: in a letter from 1926 Rohm wrote to Kugler: ‘…What matters to you both except thirst seems to be your magical sex drive. To this end I congratulate you, because I have it too…it is currently my only ‘positive' activity. …I hope to devote myself to you then ‘fully and completely'…'. Rohm did little to hide his homosexuality in his pre-Nazi days. However, even before his murder, the Nazis had begun cracking down on homosexuality, banning organizations, burning books, and arresting the first of some 100,000. Worthy of further research.
