Description:

ERNST ROHM
(1887 - 1934) Nazi Brownshirt who organized, trained and headed the SA, a friend of Hitler who was at his side in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, later set up and executed by Hitler following their disagreement on the use of the two million-strong SA. Rare A.L.S. 'Ernst Rohm' on the verso of a picture postcard mailed from Naples, Dec. 26, 1933, sent to KARL WOLFF (1906-1975), later a Colonel-general in the Waffen-SS, liaison officer for Himmler with Hitler, and German military governor of Northern Italy, who was then in Munich. Not translated but appears to be sending his greetings for the upcoming new year...the last year of Rohm's life. The card also bears an A.N.S. of EDMUND HEINES (1897–1934), Deputy to Rohm. Heines was one of the earliest members of the Nazi Party and a leading member of the SA in Munich, participating in the Beer Hall Putsch and becoming a notorious enforcer of the party. He held several high-ranking positions in the Nazi administration until he was executed along with Rohm during the Night of the Long Knives in June 1934. Heines belonged to Rohm's homosexual circle of friends, which Hitler had tolerated. It later proved to be convenient for Hitler during the upcoming purge of SA leaders, as it could tie him and others to the 'Rohm Putsch'.
