Description:

ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899 - 1961) American writer, a Nobel prize winner and author of For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea, and other classic novels. Fine content A.L.S. signed twice: "Papa" and again with initials "EH", 1p. 4to. on lightweight airmail paper, [n.p.], Mar. 2, 1954 to Kit Figgis. While recovering from his aircraft accidents, Hemingway writes his friend and care-giver in a shaky hand, in small part: "...I sent Roy Marsh [pilot in the first crash] a letter and sent my gear to you...Roy will stand up for me...I miss you double repeat double equals twice as much...Things are OK here. Miss Mary better but her nerves took a beating But she is one unusually brave girl...OK at this point I miss you (period)...Bill Howe cables and writes that Look will pay 20,000 (not pounds, miserable dollars) for the piece if it is up to my usual standard [?] it won't be...Tell Honest Larry [Figis] for you both to drink some proper champagne...I can never thank you enough for helping me so much when things were not too easy...I must be careful to let the kidney settle good, also the lousy clot on the leg...Probably lose the left eye but it was never worth a damn since greb[?] fooled with it...If you want to gamble "ill cable 'Twenty hell stop want 40' but it might be safer to stand on what cards we have...It is very nice here. Cool and warm and lovely. Please have lots of fun and don't work too hard and know that Papa loves you..." Hemingway pens a brief postscript on verso which shows-through affecting two of the three signatures, one "Papa" in margin is fine as is the balance of the letter. With a 6" x 8" news photo of the Hemingways with pilot Marsh. Kit Figgis and her husband Larry, both British citizens living in Africa, assisted the Hemingways in the aftermath of their two airplane crashes in Uganda in two days. Following the second crash in which the couple was badly injured, Hemingway nevertheless walked out of the jungle in high spirits: "..carrying a bunch of bananas and a bottle of gin, and was quoted...as saying: "˜My luck, she is running very good.'" Figgis also assisted in writing the Look article referred to by Hemingway in this letter.
