Description:

ERICH VON MANSTEIN
(1887 - 1973) German field marshal who devised the plan to conquer France, held various commands on the Russian front, sacked by Hitler for a retreat. MANSTEIN ASKS LEAVE FROM NUREMBERG PRISON FOR CHRISTMAS. Incredible content T.L.S. in German while a prisoner at Nuremberg, 1p. 4to., December 11, 1945, to the commandant of the Nuremberg Prison, Colonel Burton C. Andrus incredibly requesting a leave for the Christmas season. In full: 'I request you to grant me, in accordance with the provisions of the Geneva Convention, and on the basis of my giving my word of honor, leave in the British sector during the Christmas recess in the trial proceedings. Reason: Important family matters. My family house is in the British zone within the area of Camp F. in Holstein.' File holes to the top margin, toned. Of course, such an arrogant request was summarily denied. Manstein was later convicted of nine war crimes, included shooting Soviet war prisoners, carrying out the commissar order, and allowing subordinates to shoot civilians.
