Gustav Marsch, a Lt. Col. and Quartermasters in Headquarters Russia. Manstein states, in part: "...The reasons for the award are his many years of service as Quartermaster of the Norwegian Mountain Troops from June 1, 1941 to Aug. 1, 1942, and his subsequent successful employment in the same position on the staff of the Commander in Chief of the Army Group South from Dec. 1, 1942, and awarded the War Merit Cross with Swords First Class...In 1942/43 his responsibility was to supply the fighting armies their full strength of rations to 4,000,000 mill. The reserve command of the 2nd Hungarian and 8th Italian army demanded that Lt. Col. Marsch produce the maximum level of ability, organization and improvisation...He has always excelled with calm leadership...many times when longer leave was taken, he represented the command staff of the command headquarters in the enemy fight with his quiet, factual, kind, clever and winning advice...".
